Christian Formation

Learning to address injustice is a critical dimension of our being formed in Christ. In fact, the closer we draw to God, the more clearly we see the needs of our neighbors near and far. That's the way transformation happens. It's through transformed people that God transforms the world.

We, in the department of Christian Formation, will continue to find ways to equip the church to respond to injustice. Here are a few that are currently available. Check back often to see what's been added.

Children's Service Project

This year's Children's Service Project, "Hope for Refugee Children" will enable children in North America to help refugee children in Colombia.  The money they give will care for children in India by providing them with food, clothing, and an education. In this way, children are given opportunities that keep them from being so vulnerable to human trafficking.  See more about this Children's Service Project here.

Feet to Faith: Justice Ministry for Youth

It is our strong desire to challenge youth to be followers of Jesus Christ, being a people who consistently live out both the Great Commission and the Great Commandment. Feet to Faith: Justice Ministry has come about as a response to this desire. In the summer of 2008 students from the North Pacific Conference gathered to explore and expose youth to injustices in their corner of the world. Students were challenged to not only understand what is happening in the world, but to work to make changes in their local churches, schools and communities.

We want students to realize that God desires to use them where they are for such a time as this. They are indeed called to do justice, lover mercy and walk humbly with their God. Many students are not called to go across the world, but all are called to serve in whatever ways God can use them today. Feet to Faith will enable students to serve in the region where they live, seeing the injustices that are all around them, but to also see the many ways that their faith in action can have an impact around the world.

Feet to Faith is a pilot program of the Department of Christian Formation working in partnership with each conference to design a model that works in their context. The Northwest Conference has hosted a Mission Outreach Venture Experience (MOVE) for a number of years. Through the initiatives of CHIC 2009 each conference will be invited to dream and vision ways that we can impact our world and our community. Watch for details on the North Pacific Conference website.

We've looked for teaching-learning opportunities that are particularly formational in their approach. We recommend the following:

The Justice Mission: A Curriculum for Youth

The Department of Christian Formation has reviewed this curriculum which focuses on God's heart for justice. It brings to light some of the many injustices that occur in this world, including forced and child labor. It is a five-session curriculum with Bible studies and video clips integrated into every lesson. Click here for a detailed evaluation.

The 24/7 Experience

This DVD-based curriculum for youth was produced by the ECC for its triennial youth conference (CHIC) and is now published by Zondervan/Youth Specialties. The curriculum features, among other ministry leaders, Gary Haugen, president/CEO of International Justice Mission. The curriculum can be ordered through the Covenant online bookstore by clicking here.

Good News About Injustice

A 4-session study guide is available to accompany the book written by Gary Haugen. This series is recommended by the Department of Christian Formation.
