God Condemns Injustice And Calls People To Act Justly

Exodus 22:21-22

Do not mistreat an alien or oppress him, for you were aliens in Egypt.  Do not take advantage of a widow or an orphan.

Exodus 23:6-9

Do not deny justice to your poor people in their lawsuits.  Have nothing to do with a false charge and do not put an innocent or honest person to death, for I will not acquit the guilty.  Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds those who see and twists the words of the righteous.  Do not oppress an alien; you yourselves know how it feels to be aliens, because you were aliens in Egypt.

Leviticus 19:13-16

Do not defraud your neighbor or rob him.  Do not hold back the wages of a hired man overnight.  Do not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block in front of the blind, but fear your God.  I am the LORD.  Do not pervert justice; do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great, but judge your neighbor fairly. Do not go about spreading slander among your people.  Do not do anything that endangers your neighbor's life.

Leviticus 19:33-34

When a foreigner lives with you in your land, don't take advantage of him.  Treat the foreigner the same as a native.  Love him like one of your own.  Remember that you were once foreigners in Egypt.  I am GOD, your God.

Deuteronomy 16:19-20

Do not pervert justice or show partiality.  Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the righteous. Follow justice and justice alone, so that you may live and posses the land the LORD your God is giving you.

Deuteronomy 24:14-15,17

Do not take advantage of a hired man who is poor and needy, whether he is a brother Israelite or an alien living in one of your towns.  Pay him his wages each day before sunset, because he is poor and is counting on it. Otherwise he may cry to the LORD against you, and you will be guilty of sin.  Do not deprive the alien or the fatherless of justice, or take the cloak of the widow as a pledge.

Deuteronomy 25:13-16

Do not have two differing weights in your bag, one heavy, one light.  Do not have two differing measures in your house, one large, one small. You must have accurate and honest weights and measures, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.  For the LORD your God detests anyone who does these things, anyone who deals dishonestly.

Proverbs 18:5

It is not good to be partial to the wicked or to deprive the innocent of justice.

Ezekiel 16:49

Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom:  She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy.

Ezekiel 22:2a,6-7,12,27,29

“Son of man, will you judge her? Will you judge this city of bloodshed?  “See how each of the princes of Israel who are in you uses his power to shed blood.  In you they have treated father and mother with contempt; in you they have oppressed the alien and mistreated the fatherless and the widow.  In you men accept bribes to shed blood; you take usury and excessive interest and make unjust gain from your neighbors by extortion.  And you have forgotten me, declares the Sovereign LORD.”  Her officials within her are like wolves tearing their prey; they shed blood and kill people to make unjust gain.  The people of the land practice extortion and commit robbery; they oppress the poor and needy and mistreat the alien, denying them justice.”

Daniel 4:27

Therefore, O king, be pleased to accept my advice: Renounce your sins by doing what is right, and you wickedness by being kind to the oppressed.

Amos 1:6

This is what the LORD says: “For three sins of Gaza, even for four, I will not turn back my wrath.  Because she took captive whole communities and sold them to Edom.

Amos 2:6-7a

This is what the LORD says: “For three sins of Israel, even for four, I will not turn back my wrath.  They sell the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals.  They trample on the heads of the poor as upon the dust of the ground and deny justice to the oppressed.
