the Spirit is moving

I’m flying home from Denver right now and I’m reflecting on how God is using Veritas to awaken the church through His Spirit. There are two recent developments for which I am most grateful.

A few weeks I was teaching Veritas in Fresno at First Covenant Church. I met Milt and Marge Johnson, ages 91 and 89. They are the oldest couple to ever attend Veritas. Wow!

Their sense of intentionality moved me deeply. Ages 91 and 89, and here they are at Veritas learning how their beloved church can become healthy and missional. What a godly example of vim and vigor for the kingdom!

Milt and Marge remind me of the seniors at another First Covenant Church…the one in Portland, Oregon. I served there as pastor for seven years before being called into this new role. Like Milt and Marge, these seniors were willing to move forward with healthy missional change because they wanted to see their church once again brimming with new life. It was not always easy for them, but without their support and blessing, the revitalization of FCC never would have happened.

I admire people like this. I admire their godly example, openness to change, accumulated wisdom, prayer and financial support… and the list goes on and on.

Call it wishful thinking, but what if more 70, 80 and 90 year olds throughout the Covenant exhibited this kind of intentionality for healthy missional ministry. Wouldn’t that be something? How awesome it would be to see their faith passed on to future generations (Psalm 78:6).

The second way I have seen God move happened in Glenburn, Maine. And I wasn’t even there to see it…and that’s the point!  Veritas was taught without me for the very first time.

Joel Kruggel, a member of the Veritas teaching team, taught the workshop for a number of Covenant churches in the area. One church drove four hours just to be there. I heard that Joel did an excellent job and that God’s Spirit was really moving.

Joel is one of five certified Veritas trainers. The team was created because I could not keep up with the demand. God is now moving Veritas into its second generation of life. This feels really good!

If you want to host Veritas for your cluster of churches, please contact your conference superintendent. Then get in touch with Chris Hagberg (chris.hagberg (at) covchurch.org) for more of the details. We would need commitments from five churches in any given area to make it go.
